The AI trade's hardest week since June ended with the loudest voice in the market saying the quiet part: the money behind the build-out is getting more expensive, and for the smallest borrowers it is disappearing altogether.
What Musk said
On Sunday, Elon Musk posted that SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt financing to buy GPUs — the processors that power AI systems — arriving in the first half of 2027. Bloomberg had reported the talks earlier: the structure runs through a special purpose vehicle that keeps the debt off SpaceX's balance sheet and protects its investment-grade rating, with Goldman Sachs leading and Apollo Global Management among the investors approached.
Then came the forecast. Musk wrote that debt markets have largely shut for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers — and predicted that most of the 200-plus so-called neoclouds face widespread failure and consolidation, with only a small number surviving. Asked whether he was talking the sector down ahead of a purchase, he was blunt: SpaceX is not buying any neoclouds.
His own numbers explain his confidence. SpaceX's AI unit — the company calls it Super Intelligence — did $7.56 billion of revenue in the third quarter, nine times the year before, on top of the Starlink and launch businesses that make the company investment grade in the first place.
